What should we pray for?

The book of Acts in the Bible gives us insight into the early days of the church of Jesus. In Acts 4 we learn how Peter and John were arrested by the same leaders of the people who killed Jesus. Their lives had been severely under threat because they preached the gospel of Jesus. One can only think how scared they must have been. After their release, the church prayed for them (Acts 4:23-31). It was such a powerful prayer that “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Interesting that the church did not pray for better times, for new political leaders, for economic prosperity or anything connected with their own comfort or well-being. They prayed “Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

The church prayed for the courage to preach the Word and for wonders and signs and healing through the name of Jesus. The purpose of the prayer was to make Jesus known to all, despite their lousy and life-threatening circumstances.
